Cerebria: The Inside World

These monsters each represent different emotions that will be featured in Mindclash Game’s upcoming board game, Cerebria: The Inside World. I was contacted to design 64 different creatures in total, each with a different theme, different strength of feeling, as well as both the “positive” and “negative” versions of each. These characters are only rendered in tight pencil and are to be finished by one of Mindclash’s artists, Villo Farkas, so as to keep the aesthetic of the entire game cohesive. Being a part of this game has been an incredibly rewarding experience–I can’t wait to play it myself! Look for the game’s Kickstarter this coming September!

Rendering Styles

Victor graciously volunteered to help me show all the styles and media I use to render my art! Often when I design a character I like to use traditional media, sketching with pencil, inking with pen, and coloring with watercolor. If I’m designing a character for a game, application, to be screen printed, or even to just be printed on paper, I’ll often use a different rendering style. Some uses call for something more flat (like a mobile game or certain types of printing), and some call for a more painterly rendering (like official art or a children’s book!). From top to bottom you’ll see my traditional inking style, full watercolor painting, a black-and-white vector image for use as a screen print or vinyl cutouts, a flat digital rendering, and a more complex painterly digital rendering.

“Lightning Makes Babies” is a game about rescuing babies, spawned by lightning, before the lightning strikes them again! This project is currently on hold, and is a future title of Dragon Army. I was in charge of creating the visual style and all assets for the game while it was in production. Here are some samples of how these characters evolved and how their medium, a phone screen, influenced that evolution.

One of my favorite media to use is watercolors. I enjoy putting down my lines and details in ink, then being able to add even more depth using watercolors. The medium allows for a looseness you just can’t get using digital methods or markers and is a lot of fun once you “let go” a little.

I love creating creatures and characters. These are samples of the monsters I draw daily! Sometimes I just think of random characteristics, other times I start by combining existing creatures. Some of these are even lined up to be painted! There is the first volume of a book of these critters on the way, but in the meantime, feel free to follow my daily posts on any of my social media! Nearly the opposite of using paints and traditional media, I also love using my computer and doing vector work. From logo design to creating assets for repeating patterns to making images to cut out on my vinyl cutter, vector files are an incredibly powerful tool.

Patterns

During school I was fortunate enough to learn how to create repeating patterns and how to apply them to the world of textiles. That class created a bit of a monster, I’m afraid, and I became addicted to pattern design! The process is cathartic–I really enjoy spacing out assets and discovering how to best lay out items so they repeat without looking like they’re repeating. Soon I will be creating dresses with my original character patterns to wear at conventions and around town!
