Victor (pictured here) graciously volunteered to demonstrate the styles and media I use to render my art. Often when I design a character I like to use traditional media, sketching with pencil, inking with pen, and coloring with watercolor.
If I’m designing a character for a game, application, to be screen printed, or even to just be printed on paper, I’ll often use a different rendering style. Some uses call for something more flat (like a mobile game or certain types of printing), and some call for a more painterly rendering (like official art or a children’s book!).
From top to bottom you’ll see my traditional inking style, full watercolor painting, a black-and-white vector image for use as a screen print or vinyl cutouts, a flat digital rendering, and a more complex painterly digital rendering.
